Tax notices are usually mailed in October. Taxes are due upon receipt of the statement. Penalty & Interest begins to accrue on February 1st. Payments are posted according to postmark. It is not necessary to receive a bill in order to pay your taxes. It is your responsibility as the property owner to ensure you receive a tax statement and that the taxes are paid on time. Taxes are due at the same time every year. If you have not received your statement by mid-November, it is your responsibility to notify us so that we can send out another statement.

It is the Owner's responsibility to ensure the information on their Tax Statement is correct. All request for general information changes are done through Cherokee Central Appraisal District. They may be reached at 903-683-2296.

If your taxes are to be paid by a mortgage company and you receive the statement, write your loan number on the tax notice and send it immediately to your mortgage company.

All businesses are taxed on their personal property, such as furniture, fixtures, inventory, machinery, equipment, etc. The statement you received is for your business personal property and not for the real estate. The real estate is taxed separately and the statement is sent directly to the property owner.

Failure to receive a tax notice does not affect the validity of the tax, penalty, interest, the due date, the existence of a tax lien, or any procedure instituted to collect a tax (sec 31.01(g) Texas Property Tax Code). It is the property owner’s responsibility to make sure that the correct name and address is listed for each property owner.

Taxes can be paid in any of our three Tax Office locations (Rusk, Jacksonville, Alto) in the form of cash, checks, money orders, and debit/credit cards. Please Note: There is a nominal fee for using the debit/credit card services. Payments can also be mailed to: Cherokee County Tax Office, 135 S. Main St. Rusk, TX 75785. Please enclose a copy of your statement or the payment stub with your payment or write the account number(s) on your check.
